HARROW BAPTIST CHURCH

Music for our Bicentenary year 2006

January

Our member John Barnard was commissioned to write a tune for a new setting of Psalm 118 by Revd. Bob Gardiner. John introduced the tune to the congregation at the morning service on 22nd January, which was the united service by Churches Together in Central Harrow for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We hope to use this hymn throughout the year and beyond, and that it will join John’s other popular published work for Jubilate Hymns. The words of this hymn are on this website and you can find it by clicking here.

The Korean Students’ Choir is made up of voice students from universities and colleges in the Seoul area. They have toured Europe before, but this will be their first visit to Harrow. The choir will sing instead of the usual evening service on Sunday 29th January at 7.00 p.m. No tickets are required; a retiring collection for the Bicentenary Appeal and Korean mission work will be taken.

February

Vocal and instrumental contributions from the Korean and African groups within the congregation will be included when Revd. David Coffey preaches on Sunday February 19th at 10.30 a.m. David has been General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain for 15 years and this year is President of the Baptist World Alliance.

March

Services at Harrow Baptist Church are usually accompanied by James McInnes in the mornings on the church organ, which was transferred from the previous building. James has great knowledge and skill especially in the German tradition and his voluntaries and incidental music are always meticulously chosen and prepared to match the theme of the service.

Evening services have a rota of three regular pianists, but this month we will try something different.....a string quartet is planned to accompany the singing, including the North West London Regional Celebration at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday 12th March.

Dr. John Bell of the Iona Community will be preaching at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 19th March. He has a very special touch when leading worship. We will sing a variety of music from Iona and other traditions.

December

On Christmas Eve 24th December at 10.30 a.m., a modern Christmas Service entitled ‘Bethlehem!’ by Paul Wigmore and John Barnard.
