MORNING WORSHIP

Preparation

Call to worship

Bob (pouring water):

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and void,

And darkness was upon the face of the deep;

And the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;

the God of glory thunders,

the Lord, upon many waters.

Shaggy (with wind chimes):

The wind blows where it chooses,

And you hear the sound of it,

But you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,

And strips the forest bare;

And in God's temple all cry, "Glory!"

Basil Amey (carrying/ pouring soil):

When you send forth your Spirit all living things are created;

And you renew the face of the earth.

The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it,

the world and those who live in it. )

David Staple (with candle):

I baptize with you water;

But one more powerful than I is coming

Who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

Hymn 290 Holy Spirit ever dwelling

Prayer

God of power, You have sent the Spirit of love,

forgive us all the times we put conditions on our love.

You have sent the Spirit of joy

forgive us all the times we are disagreeable and unwelcome witnesses.

You have sent the Spirit of peace

forgive us all the times our words and actions contribute towards conflict and division.

You have sent the Spirit of patience

forgive us all the times we worry because we do not see instant results to prayer.

You have sent the Spirit of kindness

forgive us all the times we have neglected people’s needs.

You have sent the Spirit of goodness

forgive us all the times we have wilfully or thoughtlessly caused pain by our words or actions.

You have sent the Spirit of faithfulness

forgive us all the times our discipleship has lacked credibility.

You have sent the Spirit of gentleness

forgive us all the times we have been aggressive in our attitude towards others

You have sent the Spirit of self-control

forgive us all the times we have hurt others by our careless manner.

Gracious and merciful God, grant us your forgiveness and your love that we may truly care for one another.

Refresh and renew us with your Spirit so that we can be fruitful and vital disciples of Jesus Christ. Amen

Children’s prayer ©Bruce D Prewer & Open Book Publishers

Warm wind of heaven,

Moving the face of waters

Twirling tree blossoms

Fostering wild animals,

Visit our untamed places.

Warm Wind of heaven,

Activating human clay

Raising consciousness

Stirring immortal longings

Fill up our empty spaces.

Warm Wind of heaven

Calling through leaders

Singing through psalmists

Reforming through prophets

Unite our warring races.

Warm Wind of heaven

Overflowing Jesus Christ

Enfolding all the lost

Keeping the church honest

Swamp us with your graces.

Warm Wind of heaven

The gift of loving

The love of giving

The joy of living

Bless our upturned faces.

Bicentenary hymn words rjg, tune © John Barnard

O give thanks to the Lord,

His mercy endures for ever,

O give thanks to the Lord,

His righteousness wins the day.

Let all of the peoples on earth proclaim,

His mercy endures for ever,

Though princes and presidents shame his name:

His faithfulness never fails.

When swarming like bees with their deadly sting,

The powers of evil muster,

We trust in the Lord and defiantly sing,

His faithfulness never fails.

The stone that was dumped at the back of the yard

Now has the place of honour

Christ comes to save in the name of the Lord:

His faithfulness never fails.

With shouts of salvation and waving of palms

We celebrate his triumph;

Death’s evil dominions have been disarmed:

His faithfulness never fails.

For this is the day that the Lord has made

We celebrate its splendours:

God’s justice - the answer for all that we’ve prayed,

Has proved that it never fails.

Wind of God, dynamic Spirit,

Breathe upon our hearts today;

That we may your power inherit

Hear us. Spirit, as we pray:

Fill the vacuum that enslaves us _

Emptiness of heart and soul;

And, through Jesus Christ who saves us,

Give us life and make us whole.

Voice of God, prophetic Spirit,

Speak to every heart today

To encourage or prohibit,

Urging action or delay:

Clear the vagueness which impedes us _

Come, enlighten mind and soul;

And, through Jesus Christ who leads us,

Teach the truth that makes us whole.

Fire of God, volcanic Spirit,

Burn within our hearts today;

Cleanse our sin _ may we exhibit

Holiness in every way:

Purge the squalidness that shames us,

Soils the body, taints the soul;

And, through Jesus Christ who claims us,

Purify us, make us whole.

Hymn   © W. Richard Turner Coe fen

God give us vision to become the church you’d have us be,

That we might serve a world in need and help all those we see;

To live our lives as servants true recalling Jesus word,

That when we serve the least of them we serve our risen Lord..

God give us leaders wise and strong like those at Pentecost,

Whose lives were changed by living fire when all their dreams seemed lost;

We feel God’s presence here today the Holy Spirit stirs,

Reviving us and making all your people ministers.

Lord sends us forth to minister and serve in every way,

Offering our service, gifts and time, but first we pledge to pray.

Inspire us Lord to greater things than we have done before

That you not us be glorified and people love you more.
